Music like any other artistic form of expression has backers in the scientific world, who have studied, researched and theorized extensively to propagate music as an important benefactor of human biological and psychological processes.

Much like meditation, yoga or tai-chi, music has provided solace to scores of people around the World. It has cut across boundaries of ethnicity, religion, creed and has throughout generations been used to disseminate important ideals, goals, values and in many cases to connect with God. All of which have affected the mind, body and soul of the individuals or groups committing to it, positively.

Here are some of the documented benefits of music on the human anatomy as well as behavior, which have been provided by countless research groups comprising of experts in the field of neuroscience, psychology, biology, physiology, physics and education working together with musicians to demystify the inherent benefits of music –

  • Heartbeat, Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate

The human heartbeat is aligned and attuned to sound and music. The heart rate tends to speed up and slow down to match the rhythm of the music one is listening to or playing. It also changes its response in cognizance to other musical variables like frequency, tempo or volume. Physical body movements are attuned with the tempo of the music. If a person walks, runs or does any other physical activity while listening to music, the speed of the individual aligns itself with the tempo of the music they are treating themselves to. Breathing rates function a similar way and hence regulates the blood pressure of the body.

  • Regulation of Stress Related Hormones and Brain Waves

Anesthesiologists have claimed that listening to relaxing, ambient music significantly reduces the level of stress hormones in the bloodstream of the individual. In some cases, music has replaced the need for medication. Brain waves on the other hand are equalized while playing or listening to music. This is because depending on the frequency and the tempo of the music, alpha, beta, theta or delta waves are generated which are slower than the waves mentioned before them respectively. The slower the brain waves, the more relaxed the brain is.

  • Immune System

The basics of immunology suggests that an individual can only resist a certain strand of bacteria or disease, if his/her whole body works in harmony. It is only when blood, lymph and other fluids circulate properly while organs like liver, spleen and kidneys hold their integrity, that a body is equipped to develop important anti-bodies which will deem the body immune. Listening to or playing music, not only relaxes the body but provides oxygen to the blood which synergizes important proteins like interlukin 1, that assists the body in resisting diseases like cancer, aids and many more by increasing platelet production, cellular protection and lymphocyte stimulation.

  • Memory, Creativity and Productivity

Music helps the mind to concentrate. Ambient music can be used while studying, to empower the mind with a paced retention. This is because the ‘Mozart Effect’, that is a paced 60 beats per minute pattern activates both the left and the right parts of the brain simultaneously. Playing music over and over again leads to the musician with an ability to memorize data efficiently. The mind is prone to creativity, as It opens up due to exposure to music of varying genres and complexities. Science has also proved that listening to classical music before any form of work can increase their productivity extensively.
